Choosing a car seat can feel overwhelming, and honestly, it should be something you take time over and ask all the right questions.
A car seat is one of the most important safety purchases you’ll make for your baby, and the “right” one often depends less on price or brand… and more on your needs.
Questions You Need To Ask Yourself Before car Seat Shopping.
Do you want a car seat that clicks onto your pram?
Do you want one seat from birth to 4 years, or even up to 12 years?
Will your baby travel in more than one car?
Do you want one rotating base to work through multiple stages?
Do you want extended rear-facing for added protection?
These are the questions that matter.

At Bumps n Babies, we always recommend choosing from trusted, safety-led brands such as Maxi-Cosi, Silver Cross, and Nuna. Along with selected brand-specific options like iCandy Cocoon, Bebecar Easymaxi, Egg Shell 360 and Oyster Capsule 360.
Because when it comes to car seat safety…
Never compromise.

An infant carrier is the removable “bucket-style” seat many parents start with. These attach to many different pram brands making them an ideal choice for parents who want to be able to lift the car seat off the chassis or base and carry with them.
This may be right for you if you want:
✔ A seat that moves from car to pram to home
✔ Minimal disturbance if baby falls asleep in the car
(never leave your baby in the car seat for longer than 1.5/2 hours at a time)
✔ A travel system for day-to-day convenience
✔ A seat that can easily move between vehicles – with the addition of a base
✔ The option to add a second base for another car
Very important:
Not all car seats fit all prams.
Always check compatibility.
Many Maxi-Cosi and Nuna infant carriers fit multiple stroller brands using adapters.
Brand-specific seats like iCandy Cocoon or Egg Shell 360 often work only within their own brand ecosystem.
Important to remember when choosing your pram and car seat combo! At Bumps n Babies we bundle car seats and prams together making the whole process alot simpler.
All-in-One or Extended Use Car Seat (Birth to 4 Years or Up to 12 Years)
These stay in the car and grow with your child. So there is no need to consider if they are compatible with your dream pram. Get the best of both worlds.
Some take you from birth to around 4 years.
Some can take you all the way to 12 years.
This may suit you if you want:
✔ One long-term investment
✔ Often an ideal choice for caregivers and Grandparents
✔ Excellent safety features
✔ Extended rear-facing options
✔ 360 rotation for easier lifting
✔ Often deeper recline features
The trade-off?
They do not detach and go onto your pram. So those convenient quick errands still mean removing your baby and popping them in the carrycot or carrying.
So if you want that travel-system convenience, this may not be your best first seat.

What Is Extended Rear-Facing — And Why Does It Matter?
Extended rear-facing means keeping your child facing the rear of the car for longer, highly recommended for the safety of your little one! This can be from upto 15 months or 4 years with some seats.
This is strongly encouraged under modern i-Size (R129) regulations.
Why it matters:
In a frontal collision (the most common serious collision), rear-facing seats help:
- Support the head
- Protect the neck
- Reduce spinal loading
- Distribute crash forces more safely across the back
This is especially important because babies and toddlers have relatively heavy heads and developing neck structures.
That’s why many safety experts encourage rear-facing as long as your seat allows.
Should You Choose a Base That Works for the Next Stage Too?
This is a big one! And often overlooked as its a future decision.
Some rotating bases can be used first with your infant carrier…
…and later with your next-stage toddler seat. Personally this is a great investment …but it does mean you are tied to purchase the next stage seat from that brand .
It can also mean:
- Less waste
- Better long-term investment
- Familiar installation
- One system you already trust
Definitely worth considering.

Infant Carrier vs All-in-One: Which Is Better?
| Feature | Infant Carrier | All-in-One |
|---|---|---|
| Attaches to pram | Yes | No |
| Detachable | Yes | No |
| Great for newborn travel systems | Yes | No |
| Can last to 4 years+ | No | Yes |
| Can last to 12 years | No | Some can |
| Easier multi-car use | Yes | No |
| Often offers extended rear-facing | Some | Often |
| Long-term value | Moderate | High |
My honest view?
If you want maximum convenience with a pram:
Start with an infant carrier.
If you prefer long-term value and fewer upgrades:
Consider an all-in-one.
For some families?
The best answer is both at different stages.
Its a choice that is personal to your lifestyle and we are here to advise and run through all your options so you can make an informed decision.
