Baby Essentials 101: The Must-Haves, the Maybes, and the Total Money Wasters

The baby must haves and must nots

The Must Have and Must Not Have’s

Stepping into parenthood is magical, emotional… and if we’re honest, a little overwhelming. One minute you’re happily browsing baby names, and the next you’re staring at a 10-page shopping list wondering if you really need a wipe warmer, a nappy bin, and seventeen matching muslin cloths. (Spoiler alert: you don’t.)

Let’s strip it back to the truth – the things you absolutely need, the “nice-to-haves,” and the stuff you’ll regret wasting money on. Grab a cuppa, mama-to-be, and let’s get real.

1️⃣ Must-Haves: The Real MVPs of New Baby Life

These are the essentials that make your life easier, keep baby safe, and save you from midnight meltdowns (yours, not just baby’s).

✔ Travel System with Carrycot + Quality Car Seat & Isofix Base

Your pram will be your everyday sidekick – so make it a good one. A lie-flat carrycot and one approved for overnight sleeping is crucial for safe naps on the go (car seats are for short journeys only, folks), and pairing it with a top-quality car seat and Isofix base keeps baby safe and makes your life so much easier. Bonus: you don’t need every matching accessory – a cup holder that costs £40? Your regular coffee cup will survive.

✔ Carrycot Stand or Bedside Crib

Experts recommend keeping baby close to you at night for the first six months. A bedside crib lets you reach them quickly for feeds and cuddles, all while keeping them safely in their own space. Trust us, you’ll be grateful you’re not getting out of bed at 3am!

✔ A Good-Quality (and Beautiful!) Baby Bag – Like Bellaboo

Let’s be real: you’ll carry your baby bag every day for the next few years. It’s basically your new handbag, so make it one you love. Bellaboo bags are practical, stylish, and designed for mums who want function without sacrificing fashion. Spacious, wipeable, with pockets for days – you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Bonus: it’s cute enough that no one will ever guess it’s holding nappies and snacks.

✔ Two Changing Mats

One upstairs, one downstairs – because babies have an uncanny ability to have nappy explosions when you’re furthest from your only mat. A quick, cheap solution that saves your carpet and your sanity. Keep it stashed with spare nappies, wipes and a change of clothes.

✔ Sleepbags (3–4)

Forget loose blankets – they end up over baby’s face or on the floor by midnight. A sleepbag keeps your little one cozy, safe, and easy to change during those night feeds. Have at least three or four… babies have a real talent for creating laundry.

✔ A Quality Mattress (Brand-New Only)

Never reuse a mattress – not even between siblings. A fresh mattress reduces safety risks and ensures proper support for your baby’s growing spine. Choose a dual-sided, hypoallergenic, pocket-sprung one for long-lasting comfort and peace of mind.

✔ A Nursing Chair (If Space Allows)

Not essential for survival, but you’ll thank yourself later. From middle-of-the-night feeds to bedtime stories, it’s the comfiest perch in the house – and perfect for the occasional “mum just needs a moment” sit-down.

2️⃣ Maybes: Nice-to-Haves (But Totally Optional)

These are the extras that are sweet but not necessary. If you’ve got the space, budget, or just love a good aesthetic, go for it – otherwise, skip the pressure to buy it all.

Matching Everything

Instagram loves it. Your baby? They don’t care. Seriously, they’ll be just as happy in a mismatched bib and cot sheet combo. Save that cash for caffeine or a well-deserved takeaway.

Moses Basket

A bedside crib does the job brilliantly for the early months. Moses baskets are adorable but often only last a few weeks before baby outgrows them.

Dresser with Changing Table

Handy, sure. Essential? Nope. If space is tight stick to bigger storage space (wardrobe). A changing mat on the floor or bed works just as well (and no chance of baby rolling off).

Musical Mobile

Not necessary, but they’re cute and babies love staring at spinning, twinkly things. This is one “maybe” we secretly think you’ll buy anyway – and that’s okay.

3️⃣ Don’t Waste Your Money (Seriously, Don’t)

Here’s what you really, truly don’t need – no matter how convincing the adverts are.

Nappy Bin

Your normal bin will do the job. You’ll empty it so often, smells won’t have time to build up. Special bins with expensive refill cartridges? Hard pass.

Wipe Warmers

Your baby will not be emotionally scarred by a cool wipe. Promise. Save the counter space and the hassle of replacing yet another gadget that stops working at 2 a.m.

Baby Bath

Bulky, awkward, and often a pain to store. A baby bath seat or support in your regular bath or even the sink works just as well – and it’s cuter for those first splashy bath photos.

The Bottom Line

New parenthood is overwhelming enough without feeling like you need to buy the entire baby store. Focus on the safe, practical essentials: a good travel system, safe sleep setup, a brand-new quality mattress, a couple of changing mats, cozy sleepbags, and yes – a stylish, functional baby bag like Bellaboo.

Everything else? Totally optional or a total waste of money. Spend those pennies on things that truly matter – like takeaway nights, extra coffee, or a little treat for yourself (because you deserve it, mama).

At Bumps n Babies, we’ve got you covered with the essentials you really need – and we promise you won’t find a wipe warmer on our shelves.
